Weingut Loimer

The Loimer estate’s vineyards are situated in the Kamptal area, a cool and sunny region to the northwest of Vienna, near Langenlois. These vineyards are carefully divided into 100 distinct parcels and planted in seven different types of soil. Covering a total of 85 hectares, they offer significant potential for creating wines with remarkable complexity. The vineyards’ high altitude and their orientation towards the south/southeast contribute to the development of aromatic compounds in the grapes. Starting in 2006, the estate began transitioning to biodynamic viticulture, ultimately resulting in official Respekt certification for all their wines.

Fred Loimer, who knew early on that he would follow in his father’s winemaking footsteps, pursued his passion by attending Austria’s prestigious Klosterneuburg University. He also gained valuable experience in winemaking in Nahe, Germany, and California’s Napa Valley. In 1997, Fred took over the family winery, and in 1998, he acquired and refurbished a 19th-century brick cellar. In contrast to many Austrian winemakers who opt for a rich, sweet style, Fred focuses on achieving full ripeness in the vineyard while fermenting to dryness. All of Loimer’s wines bear his distinctive hallmark of precision, vitality, and balance on the palate.

The grapes used for their two regional wines, Kamptal Grüner Veltliner and Kamptal Riesling, are carefully handpicked from vines that can be up to 50 years old. These wines are characterized by their aromatic qualities and crispness, offering outstanding value.

Loimer’s single-vineyard (Erste Lage) wines are regarded among the finest in Austria. These wines, sourced from top vineyard sites in Langenlois, including ‘Ried Loiserberg’ and ‘Ried Käferberg’ Grüner Veltliner, as well as ‘Ried Steinmassl’ Riesling, showcase exceptional fruit purity and a distinct sense of terroir. Furthermore, these wines are certified both organic and biodynamic.

In addition to their widely acclaimed still wines, Fred Loimer also produces premium traditional method sparkling wines. The vineyards in his hometown of Langenlois benefit from the cool north winds and significant diurnal temperature variations, which preserve the freshness and aromatic intensity of white grape varieties. Fred also cultivates vines in Gumpoldskirchen, a historic wine-growing region in the Thermenregion, located just south of Vienna. Here, the warm air from the Pannonian plain ensures consistent ripening of black grape varieties, resulting in wines with fine fragrances. According to Fred, achieving excellence in sparkling wines requires not only high-quality fruit but also meticulous timing and precision in the winemaking process, ensuring that these sparkling wines always exhibit complexity, depth, and a refreshing character.
